New Creative Ideas for Curtains

I get a kick out of someone asking me if I have any new creative ideas for curtains.  This was my second time working with this client and that is exactly what they said to me in regards to their dining room.

They had bought some ready made draperies from a store and hung them themselves but were less than thrilled with the outcome (a story I hear all too often).
They had loved the tall curtains we installed last year in their Great Room and really just wanted the same fabric, but with a different twist.  Since I knew they trusted me, I thought they might be adventuresome with these new curtains.  I recalled a conversation I had with another designer when I attended the International Window Covering Expo earlier this year.  Take a simple pleated curtain top and treat the pleat a little differently.
So I sketched a two-prong pleat and added buttons that would be attached to both sides of the pleat.  And I was right, they took a chance and trusted my vision.  We added little black buttons to a great neutral color textured fabric.

Another custom touch was in the hardware.  The customer really did not like the look of rings on a rod, so I asked my favorite hardware vendor to weld some eyelets onto the bottom of the black metal pole.  The curtains are securely attached but seem to hang effortlessly from the bottom of the rod.

We always love a happy customer, and the next time I suggest this design to someone I will have great photos to show them!

Dining Room Window Treatment Design

Dining Room Curtains Design

Inverted Box Pleat with Curtain Side Panels and Tiebacks

This dining room has a small bay and the client wanted a simple design with some punch.  She already has one chocolate brown wall and is considering some faux painting on the ceiling.  We found a terrific coppery brown fabric with a silver/platinum embroidered flower.  We selected a very simple, tailored, inverted box pleat valance with stationary side panels.  The punch came with the decorative beaded tassel trim and matching tassel tiebacks.  Once again proving simple can be fabulous!

Beaded Tassel Trim

Now I can envision a faux finish on the ceiling with metallic tones of copper and silver…..ooh, can’t wait to see that!

Cuff Top Valance

Cuff Top Valance

Without a doubt, the most popular valance with my clients is what I call the “cuff top”.  You can see several examples in my photo gallery.  These can be made with contrast lining so that the cuff adds an interesting design elelment.  They can also be installed on different types of hardware, which changes the look dramatically.  You can see photos of them installed on knobs, poles, boards, or larger holdbacks.  Use your imagination and design away!  Shown here is the most recent one we installed for a new client in Liberty Township, OH.  Notice how we took a plain, rectangular window and added interest to it, just by raising the treatment in the middle.  This definitely grabs your eye when you walk in the room, and draws your eye upward, making the room appear larger.  Even though many clients are choosing the “cuff top” design, no two are alike………..custom!

Upholstery and Drapery Fabrics – Interpreting Swatch Labels Part 1 – Design

Going into a drapery and upholstery shop can be a bit intimidating when you want to look at fabric samples. There are hundreds of books, each with dozens of choices to consider. The store’s designer is a valuable resource when considering what fabric to use for your project. Once you begin looking, you’ll notice all kinds of codes on the back of each sample. These codes have important information about the design, fabric construction and use, its durability, other factors that relate to how long the fabric will look good, and how to clean the fabric. Let’s look at the information that specifically relates to design.

Drapery Fabric Repeats

Fabrics with a pattern, whether woven, printed, or embroidered, will have a single pattern that repeats over and over to make the overall design. Except for plain fabrics, each fabric sample will have a “repeat” listed on it. Stripes will have either a vertical or horizontal repeat; anything else will have both. Consider any point on the fabric—let’s say it’s the tip of a leaf. This exact same leaf design occurs multiple times on the fabric. The horizontal repeat is how far you have to move left or right to come to the tip of the matching leaf in the next design over. The vertical repeat is how far you have to move up or down to come to the tip of the same leaf. The larger the pattern, the more fabric you will need to place the pattern correctly for your drapery or upholstery project.

For small pattern repeats, you can usually see the full design on the sample in the fabric book. The books aren’t big enough to do this for large patterns. To help you see what the whole pattern looks like, look for a photo of it on the back of the fabric sample or in the back of the book. Most drapery and upholstery fabric companies also show their fabrics online, though it’s hard to tell if the colors you see are correct. If you still aren’t sure, ask your designer to order a sample before you buy.

By the way, if you are calculating your yardage yourself, you’ll also want to pay attention to the fabric’s width, also listed on the label.

Railroaded Drapery and Upholstery Fabrics

Drapery and upholstery fabrics are sometimes listed as “up the roll” or “railroaded.” This can be an important factor when determining it’s best use.

Let’s say you have a stripe pattern that you want to use for a curtain. If the window is tall and narrow, you likely can use one piece of fabric for each curtain panel. Generally, stripes are woven “up the roll,” meaning that as you unroll the fabric, the visible stripes get longer and longer. If you unroll the fabric and cut each piece long enough to allow for top and bottom finishes, you will have no seams in your drapery panels.

window draperies fabric choices

The “railroaded” tag on this fabric makes it suitable for use on a wide valance or cushion. Because it is railroaded, the stripes on the finished piece will go up and down, with no seams visible on the face of the valance or cushion.

But what do you do when you want the stripes to be horizontal? You could turn the fabric, but then you will have to sew pieces together to get enough length, generally not very attractive for a drapery. The alternative is to look for fabric that is “railroaded,” which means the stripes were woven in horizontally. When you unroll the fabric, you’ll see more and more horizontal stripes as you go. If you use a little imagination, it looks like those wooden ties holding a railroad track in place.

Fabric railroading is not just for stripes. Patterns, especially printed ones, can be railroaded, too. In addition to curtains, railroaded fabric is good when you want to cover a long window seat cushion or couch. You can avoid seams and still have the top of the pattern be at the back or top of the cushion so it looks right.

Upholstery Fabric Colorways

Sometimes, when a drapery or upholstery pattern is available in more than one color, the fabric label will tell you how many choices there are. Look in the same sample book for other choices, or sometimes the label will list other sample books in which the pattern can be found. You may have to go online to see all the colors.

Curtain Fabrics Can be Reversible

Sometimes, but not often, either side of a drapery or upholstery fabric can be used. These fabrics are nice when the reverse side will show, though it usually looks different from the front. Even if you’ll never see the other side, you might choose a reversible fabric if you like the pattern that’s displayed on the back in the sample book. The correct side is the one you like!

Enlist a designer to help interpret those repeats and railroading,
and to help you find the right fabrics for your project.

2 Story Window Treatment Ideas – Hunter Douglas Country Woods 2″ blinds

Before

We have been designing a lot of 2 Story Window treatments lately.  They make such a statement in a room just because of their size.  Adding fabric to the wall in a grand scale helps to “humanize” the windows, visually bringing the top windows into the room and giving it a cohesiveness it may lack otherwise.  Over the next several weeks, I will share several photos of window treatment designs we have used in the greater Cincinnati area.

The photos today show the before and after of a challenging job.  I think you can see how the fabric treatments take away the empty feeling the room had.  These windows face west and the homeowners had a terrible sun issue in the afternoon.  Hunter Douglas Country Woods 2″ blinds were selected for all the 2 story window treatments, with the top windows using the battery powered motorized PowerTilt with Platinum Technology remote control tilt system.  The top windows are arched, so we used standard rectangular blinds and covered the top with an arched cornice – a great little trick to know.

A new paint color in the room, selected specifically to match the fabrics, ties it all together.  The clients love their new look and the light control they now have.

Tiebacks – What’s Holding Your Draperies Back

Tiebacks for Draperies

Traditional fabric tiebacks are always a popular option for providing shape to your draperies. They are often made from the same fabric as the draperies. Sometimes I add decorative cording or trim, fringes, or beads to provide an accent.

peach color tiebacks for drapes

Woven Trim Tiebacks

I also like to use a wide woven trim for a tieback instead of a piece of matching fabric. This works whether or not the trim is also used on the draperies.

White drapes tiebacks

Notice the beautiful pattern on these tiebacks.

Tassel Tiebacks are a Common Favorite

I love using tassels as tiebacks because they come in such a variety of sizes, fibers, and colors. I like using both coordinating or contrasting colors to create a great accent to the window.

tassle tiebacks

I love these tassel tiebacks on elegant draperies.

How to Keep your Tiebacks in Place

Another consideration when choosing tiebacks is how to keep them in place. Many times, small rings on the backs of the tiebacks slip over small hooks that are mounted on the wall. This gives a nice, clean look, but so many other options are available!

Posts with decorative medallions are a wonderful choice. You can get square ones, round ones, metallic ones, painted ones, glass, wood, ceramic, globes, scrollwork, and more.

decorative post tiebacks

Decorative post tiebacks can add a nice tone to the room.

Posts and decorative curved arms mounted on the inside edge of the drapery can act as tiebacks as well.

These tiebacks really make these large windows look amazing.

Your drapery fabric is just one of the choices you get to decide on when looking for window treatments. Let us help you decide what’ll hold YOUR draperies back.

Motorized Window Blinds

I received a certification course in Somfy Motorized window blinds. What does that mean?

HD motorization specialsSimply put, adding “power ” to your custom window blinds adds a new dimension of convenience, child safety, and energy efficiency.  Custom Shades, blinds, or draperies can be motorized by either a battery powered or plug in motor.  If you are in the construction phase of a new house, hard wiring for window treatments is easily accomplished by an electrician.

This will eliminate the need for power cords or changing batteries.

Retrofitting motors into existing window treatments is also possible.

Adding Curtains to Plantation Shutters

Custom Curtain Treatment with Plantation Shutters

Often people wonder if they can add a fabric curtain treatment if they have plantation shutters on a window.  The answer is definitely “YES!”, but you have to be creative.  The problem arises because you still need to be able to open the shutter panel if you want access to the window.  Therefore, a curtain treatment needs to be designed that will allow for this flexibility.  Fabric adds so much to a room, and is often the finishing touch in the decorating process that ties everything else in the room together.  Shown here are two examples of adding curtain over shutters.  It requires special planning, creative hardware and extra “know how”.  This is definitely the time you want to call in a professional.

Battery Powered Wood Blinds

Battery Powered Wood Blinds are wonderful.  The can be purchased with “tilt only” capability or “tilt and lift”.  I had a call yesterday from a man who said his blind no longer worked.  I asked him if he had changed the batteries, and he hadn’t thought of that.  Depending on usage, every 1 – 2 years, the batteries will need to be changed.  Be sure and ask your installer how to change them so you will be ready!

Guide to Blinds and Shades for 2018

Your Complete Guide to Blinds and Shades

Taking on any home project can be daunting regardless of what that project is – from foundations and flooring to electrical work and ceiling finishes, there is a lot that can go into even a minor home alteration.

What many may not know is that there are tons of fantastic window blind choices that can accent your room and make it truly unique. If you’re looking for blinds in the Cincinnati area, our 2018 Guide to Blinds and Shades has everything you need.

Read on to learn about some of the top styles of window blinds that will help make your space stand out.

Venetian Blinds

By far the most popular blind style in the Cincinnati, OH area, Venetian blinds are extremely versatile and efficient.

These horizontal blinds feature small strips of either wood or metal attached to each other with strings for easy control. You usually have the option to rotate them to open and close for desired privacy, and when you raise the blinds, each of the slats stack neatly onto one another – for custom metal or wood blinds in and around the Cincinnati area, these are a great choice.

Overall, Venetian blinds are efficient, easy to use, and beautiful!

Roller Shades

Roller shades are another popular shade choice for any home, and for good reason. The easy to use style and wide range of customization make these a must-have for any home.

These fabric blinds are typically heavier fabrics and often feature a blackout lining for increased privacy. Roller blinds can very easily be lowered and raised as well, making these shades great for any occasion.

Rather than stacking on top of itself like a Venetian blind, the roller mechanism tightly rolls the fabric so it is out of the way above the window. The roller mechanism itself is also very easy to use and adds another layer of customization to your space.

Roman Blinds

Similar to roller blinds, Roman blinds are fabric window blinds that easily lower and raise, however, rather than rolling inside of the rolling mechanism, the fabric stacks on top of itself much like a Venetian blind.

This creates a timeless, classic look; however, it can block some of the window space if not installed properly. For proper installation and the best custom shade options in Cincinnati, let us provide all of your window blind needs.

Cellular Blinds

If you’re looking for window shades that are just as functional as they are aesthetically pleasing, definitely check out cellular shades. Not only are these versatile enough to match any décor, they serve as great insulation.

These shades are made with two separate layers that form an open honeycomb shape in the middle that traps air – this makes for great insulation to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They also can provide excellent sound insulation!

In addition to being functional, their unique shape can liven up any space, and the shades themselves are very easily customizable in a wide array of colors.

Plantation Shutters

Known for their timeless elegance and sophisticated style, plantation shutters turn any house into a home.

These interior shutters are available in real and faux wood to suit any interior décor. Not only are they effective and stunning, they can add value to your home. With easy to use shutter control and effective insulation, plantation shutters are more than worth the investment.

Sheer Shades

Sheer shades provide a touch of elegance and are very effective for lighting control in any space. Typically, these shades have two sheer pieces of fabric that surround horizontal or vertical vanes that can be tilted for privacy and light control, much like you would see with a Venetian shade.

These sheer window shades are versatile enough to work for a living room window to a large sliding glass door. This allows you to have great control over your lighting and privacy while adding style to your home, and if you don’t want to focus on the vanes on the window shade, the sheer fabrics help draw your attention away from them while diffusing the sunlight.

Softer Fabric Shades

A more generalized style than those mentioned previously on this list, softer fabric shdes are known for versatility and customization.

While many people use softer fabric shades in a Roman style window shade, it allows for more than just one option. A popular way to use these kinds of blinds is a tie-up shade. By bunching up the fabric and tying it at the top, it adds a sense of personalization and fun – there isn’t a wrong way to tie up the fabric, so along with the fabric style and color choices you get to add your own personality to the window shade.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are traditionally used for larger windows such as sliding glass doors or floor to ceiling windows, but they can absolutely be used for smaller windows throughout the house.

These blinds most commonly come with 3 to 4 inch vanes that can be easily rotated for lighting and privacy. You also have the choice of fabric or vinyl as the vane material, so you’ve got a lot of options to make these vertical blinds suit your home’s exact style.

Vertical blinds provide maximum privacy for large windows and still lets in tons of light when you need it.

Now that I know all about blinds, what’s next?

Are Window Blinds a Good Decor Choice?

Whether you’re looking to do one room or the whole house, you can see that there are quite a few styles you can choose from, and there are many more out there! The choices can be overwhelming, but they don’t have to be. Window blinds are a subtle yet very important part of your home’s style.

Blinds for Sliding Doors

How do you dress a naked window?

More specifically, what are good blinds for sliding doors?

Blinds for Sliding Doors 01After 15 years in the window coverings industry, I can tell you without a doubt that sliding doors pose the biggest dilemma for homeowners.  The love affair with vertical blinds has come and gone, but many people have no idea what else to do to cover a large area.  Sliding glass doors present big challenges with energy loss and light control.  They are usually in high traffic areas of the house – so very functional, energy efficient, and, at the same time, beautiful treatments are needed.  That is a lot to ask from a window treatment! Your only option is no longer blinds for sliding doors!

Blinds for Sliding Doors 02Fortunately, vendors have responded to the need.  Today there are several innovative solutions to this age old problem.  Determining  your needs for light control, privacy, energy savings, and fashion will help you to select the best treatment for you.

Here are three of my favorites.

  • THE most exciting trend in window  fashions is the  Natural Woven Shade Vertical Drapery.  These are the ultimate blend of function and fashion. The shade operates with a simple push on the guide rail, so there are no cords to tangle or break.  With so many natural woods, reeds, or grasses to choose from, ranging from sheer to opaque, there is a style for everyone!
  • For a very sleek and contemporary look, Sliding Panels are one of the fastest growing new trends in window fashions.  Flat panels of fabric slide one in front of another as you open and close the shade using a wand.  Fabrics range from opaque shade cloth to natural woven wood materials, again offering much versatility.
  • Vertical Cellular Shades offer great function and superior energy efficiency.  Available in many colors and fabrics, this shade coordinates with the other cellular shades in your home, but slides easily along a track with a push of the hand, providing a truly cordless option.

Window Treatments in Cincinnati: 4 Options For Sliding Glass Doors

window treatments in cincinnatiSliding doors are an excellent accessory/investment for every home. These doors not only offer style and convenience, but also provide other added benefits such as energy efficiency, natural light, security, and also add value to your home. Although useful, finding the right treatments for these windows/doors can be challenging at times. Finding the right window treatments to dress up the sliding glass door, without reducing its functionality or purpose, is a challenge for many people.

Outlined below are a few tips to help you choose the best option for your door(s) by using window treatments in Cincinnati.

1. Custom Shades and Blinds

Custom made blinds and window shades are perfect window treatments for sliding glass doors. You can have a custom window designer design these shades based on your preferences, style, and size of the sliding doors. Vertical blinds are the most common and most chosen window treatments for these doors, as they come with plastic or metal slats hanging from a top rail. The slats can be rotated partially or fully, depending on the amount of light you want to pass through the glass. But there are so many more choices today.

Sliding door shades are also a preferred option here, as they hang on track, where they overlap in segments blocking visibility or light, and also stack neatly together when the panels are drawn open. You, however, should look for a good and trustworthy supplier to get you some of these sliding shades.

2. Plantation Shutters

These popular window treatments are also a great option for sliding doors. Many people prefer plantation shutters as they provide a polished look on the windows, and are also available in hinged or slide-open varieties. Hinged plantation shutters swing to open or shut, while others slide to open on their track. There are plenty of options to go for when using plantation shutters. Plantation shutters, therefore, make these doors more practical and easier to use too.

3. Curtains Panels

Curtain panels provide one of the simplest ways to dress expansive sliding doors in homes. All one needs to do is find matching or patterned curtains to use as window treatments. While this can be handled easily with an in-home consultation with Kim Lyon, custom window designer to help you out. Nevertheless, you will need long, sturdy rods to hang these curtains on. You will also need easy-to-slide rings to allow drawing the curtains from the doors, or to control the amount of light passing through. Experts also recommend going for lined curtains, or sheers, to help filter out harsh sun rays.

4. Side-Mounted Panels

This entails using decorative window curtains mounted on sliders to help control light and visibility in the room. These sliders should be on a rod mounted on adjacent to the sliding glass door to provide a barrier-free zone when using the door. The best thing about side-mounted panels is that you can have a motorized one.

The four options outlined above should help you have an idea on how to make unique ones. Kim Lyon, with over 20 years experience, can come to your home and help you find the right choices for your style and budget. Call 513-398-5798.

Expanding Window Height with Art

Have you ever walked into a room and had a sense that something wasn’t right with the proportions? Usually when this happens it’s because the windows are small compared with the wall’s height.

From the outside, the windows no doubt are in balance with other features of the home’s exterior. But this sometimes creates design challenges on the inside. Happily, there are ways to compensate.

For windows that are too short, height can be added by raising the drapery rod high enough to include a decorative element above the window. On very tall walls or on an end wall of a peaked ceiling, decorative elements can be added above the rod.

The tops of the windows in this room needed to appear higher to coordinate with the height of the room. Antique glass mounted above the windows give the appearance of transom windows. Ceiling-to-floor draperies add to the appearance of height. These two elements nicely balance the proportions in the room.

Lots of space above the windows in this bedroom gave plenty of opportunity to add decorative interest with antiques while raising the appearance of the windows. The arched window frame with shutters that this homeowner found was definitely a keeper. Mirrors replaced the clear glass and gave depth to the frame. Empty window frames on either side completed the wall in a scale appropriate to the room.

If you have a room that seems a little out of proportion, don’t despair. Lots of options are available for making it appear right. We just have to get creative!

Pleated Curtain Style

The Pleated Curtain Style

has enjoyed a surge in popularity the last few years.  There is no style that is as classic and timeless as a pleated curtain.  There are many different pleat styles available to make your custom curtain unique.  Today we will look at 3 styles, each having a distinctly different look, feel, and personality. Call Window Accents for the best window treatments in Cincinnati.

Euro Pleated Curtain StylesThe Euro Pleated Curtain Style

is a very updated, current look.  This style looks great hanging from rings and works well as stationary side panels or traversing curtain.

Goblet Pleated Curtain StyleThe Goblet Pleated Curtain Style

is another variation that is very classic.  It gets it’s name from the resemblance to a wine goblet.  Goblet Pleated curtains will traverse easily, but may not stack as tightly onto the side as the Euro Pleat.

Inverted Box Pleated Curtain Style

The Inverted Box Pleated Curtain Style

can be a statement all on it’s own.  As seen here, in this photo from Chicago’s Curtain Connection, decorative elements can be added to truly make your curtain a one of a kind.  This curtain is best suited for stationary side panels, as the pleats generally do not traverse well.

Installing Blinds Almost Like Magic | Adjust-A-View Take 2

Installing custom blinds: recently we installed an Adjust-A-View shade, gave you some information on the product, and shared some pictures. Today we have a video showing the ease of operation by one of our favorite clients, Carol. In her words “They installed the blinds almost like magic.”

The Adjust-A-View is very quick and easy to install even in a non-perfect window. Typically arched windows are constructed in a manner where the sill is built up into the window. The resulting radius is less than half the diameter and no longer “perfect”. The Adjust-A-View allows for plus or minus 2 inches of imperfection to easily fit any window.

The shade is custom made for your window using Hunter Douglas, Graber, Comfortex, Kirsh and Omega products. You can then match the shades on your other windows with your Adjust-A-View.

Window Covering Child Safety Month

Child Safety

is taken very seriously at Window Accents when selling our window products.  Every product sold, whether drapery, shade, or blind has child safety features.  Most products can now be ordered cordless.  If not, other safety measures are taken to ensure the cords do not cause strangulation.

Every October, our industry supports national campaigns to bring awareness to this issue, but in reality,

every month is child safety month.

This issue has changed many of our products over the past few years, and industry standards are constantly being revised and updated.  Our vendors constantly work to create products that are fully compliant with these standards.

These guidelines are given by the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC), an industry group dedicated to educating consumers about window cord safety, and long-time sponsor of the October window-cord awareness campaign. They recommend that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords be used in homes with young children.

The Council, which provides consumers with window-cord safety information, as well as free retrofit kits for older corded window coverings, urges all parents and caregivers to follow these basic window cord-safety precautions:

  • Move all furniture, cribs, beds and climbable surfaces away from windows.
  • Keep all window cords well out of the reach of children.
  • Install only cordless window coverings in homes with young children.
  • Make sure tasseled pull cords are as short as possible. Continuous-loop pull cords on draperies and vertical blinds should be pulled tight and anchored to the floor or wall.
  • Be sure cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit inner-cord movement.

To learn more about window-cord safety, or to order free retrofit kits, go to the Window Covering Safety Council’s web site at:

www.windowcoverings.org

The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) is a coalition of major U.S. manufacturers, importers and WCSC child safety monthretailers of window coverings dedicated to educating consumers about window cord safety The Council also assists and supports its members in the industry’s ongoing efforts to encourage the use of cordless products in homes with young children, its redesign of corded products, and to support the national ANSI/WCMA standard for corded window coverings.  WCSC’s activities in no way constitute an assumption of any legal duty owed by its members or any other entity.
