We talked a couple of weeks ago about the color trends for next year and their refection of our life style today – our feeling of being constantly connected and our desire to disconnect, unwind and relax. This theme shows through in the Rustic Décor trend for our homes as well.

When we get on the internet and go to Pinterest, we see hundreds of DIY projects made from wood pallets, mason jars, burlap, and reclaimed wood. They are not only creative and cute, but they are very functional and practical and fit in with the other pieces of our home décor.

Skylights Window Treatments Let The Sunshine In

Sunshine!

We love it. We need it.

Warmth, natural lighting, vitamin D, energy and attitude are just a few of the reasons why.

We hate it. It’s too much.

Intense heat, intense light, UV rays, and glare are a few of the reasons why we need to control it.

So here we have our standard double edged sword. We have skylights in our home for great natural lighting, but then there are times when it is just too much. What to do for Skylights Window Treatments?

There are a few companies that manufacture cellular shadings systems that adapt to angled windows. The first thought might be – why are there only a few? But after your second thought, you may realize that the angle of the skylight can pose a problem, as it lends itself to the sagging of the fabric. Cellular shade construction allows an unseen cord inside the cells to keep the shade taut.

The SHGC of a bare, double-glazed window is 0.76, which means 76% of solar heat is transmitted through it. Add an opaque Duette® Architella shade and the solar heat gain coefficient drops as low as 0.15 — only 15% of the solar heat is transmitted, reducing cooing costs.

Upholstery and Drapery Fabrics – Interpreting Swatch Labels Part 5: Cleaning Codes and Methods

Cleaning Drapery and Upholstery Fabrics

Let’s face it. Things can get dirty. The best defense for window coverings and upholstery is frequent brushing and/or vacuuming with a non-metallic brush. The brush you use will depend on the fabric. Delicate fabrics need soft brushes; the sturdier fabrics used in upholstery can take something a bit stiffer. Curtains, draperies, and living room furniture seldom need more cleaning than this, but your family room sofa might be home to spilling, sticky little fingers, pets, and more. More drastic measures may be needed!

Before cleaning your couch or chair, you really need to know what kind of fabric covers your beloved furniture, or at least know what the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations are. Look underneath the chair or take the cushions off the sofa and look for a label on that flat, plain piece of fabric the cushions rest on. With luck, it has cleaning instructions. Do what it says! This is especially important if a “finish” has been applied to the fabric.

If you are having new curtains made, special ordering your furniture, or reupholstering it, you can find the proper cleaning method on the back of the sample in the fabric books you are browsing. Sometimes it’s spelled out; sometimes it’s just a letter code. Be sure to note the code on whatever fabric you choose so you’ll know how to take care of it later.

Any finishes will also be listed on the fabric label. They are usually a chemical finish that adds a property that the fabric does not naturally have, such as flame proofing or a soil and stain repellant finish. Soil and stain repellant finishes often cause spills to just bead up on the fabric—simply blot them off with a clean towel.

Cleaning code W means this fabric can be cleaned with water-based cleaner.

Cleaning Upholstery and Curtains with a “W” Cleaning Code

If the cleaning code for your draperies or chair is W, it means you can use a water-based cleaning agent. First, brush and vacuum the fabric. Then use water, water mixed with some upholstery shampoo, or foam upholstery cleaner. Use a clean sponge or towel to apply as little cleaner as possible—you don’t want to get it wet, just damp. Blot, don’t rub. Clean spots from the outside in to avoid rings. Take a second towel with just water, wring it out, and use it to “rinse” the fabric by blotting. Then let it dry. If you accidentally get it too wet, turn on the ceiling fan when you are done.

Cleaning Code “S” for Upholstery and Curtains

Alas, a cleaning code of S does not mean “simple!” You might be able to haul whatever it is off to the dry cleaner, because it has to be cleaned with a water-free dry cleaning solvent. But when’s the last time you saw someone carrying a couch into the dry cleaners? For furniture, the easiest thing to do is to call an upholstery cleaning company that will bring water-free solvents to your home to clean the piece. If you want to spot clean or try the whole thing yourself, you’ll need a home-safe dry cleaning fluid. Be sure to follow the directions carefully for the best results.

Upholstery and Drapery Cleaning Code “WS”

If the cleaning code is WS, you’re in luck. Either method, water or solvent, will work.

This curtain fabric has a cleaning code of SW, which means you can clean it with a water-based or solvent-based cleaner. Follow the label and make sure the liquid is not warm or hot. And don’t use any bleach.

What is Cleaning Code “X” on Upholstery and Draperies?

If the cleaning code on the couch is X and a spot won’t come off with vacuuming or a light brush, you might have to strategically place a piece of furniture or a throw blanket when you have guests over. X means neither water-based nor solvent-based cleaners should be used.

Keep the Covers on the Cushions!

Whatever method you use, don’t take the cushion covers off to clean them. The zippers are there for the manufacturer, not you. The covers may not fit when you go to put them back on.

 

Besides cleaning instructions, other important information on fabric labels include the design information to help you understand the pattern features, the fabric’s construction and its recommended uses, its durability, and ratings that may indicate how long the fabric will look good. Don’t be overwhelmed by all the choices and information! Your designer will help you choose the right fabric.

Upholstery and Drapery Fabrics – Interpreting Swatch Labels Part 4: Factors Affecting How Long Your Fabric Will Look Good

There are many factors that can affect how long the drapery and upholstery fabrics in your home will look good. Some relate to wear and some relate to where you put it. Fabric suppliers will sometimes highlight a specific characteristic on a fabric such as resistance to fading or pilling. Here’s how to interpret those specialized ratings.

Are Upholstery and Curtain Fabrics Resistant to Fading?

Sunlight and fluorescent light can cause in-home fabrics to fade. Some curtain and furniture fabric suppliers list an ISO-105-B02 colorfastness grade of 1 to 5, with 1 meaning it will fade noticeably and 5 meaning it won’t fade—or at least it didn’t during testing. All upholstery and window fabrics should have a rating of at least 4. Other rating systems may also be used. Some drapery and upholstery fabric lines, such as Sunbrella, are made specifically for uses in the sun. I don’t usually see such ratings because most fabrics for the home are rated at 4 or 5, so it’s not usually a concern.

This fabric has passed both the NFPA-260 and California tests for flammability. The black and white photo lets you see the overall pattern and size of the repeats.

Are Upholstery and Curtain Fabrics Resistant to Pilling?

You’ve seen pilling on sweaters, I’m sure. It’s those little fuzzy balls that don’t brush off. The balls are actually fiber ends that have twisted together. You have probably realized that they aren’t easy to remove, and they aren’t very pretty. That’s why you don’t want them on your upholstered furniture or draperies. Many factors affect fabric pilling, including the type of fiber, the length of the fibers, how they are twisted, the fabric weave, and how the fabric is finished. Most mills develop curtain and upholstery fabrics that are resistant to pilling, so I’ve rarely seen ratings. In twenty-five years, I have seen only a few cases of unsightly pilling, so it’s not something I worry about. If you do see a rating, it will probably be a Martindale Grade of 1 (severe) to 5 (no pilling).

 

Upholstery and Drapery Fabric Flammability

One rating that I see on a lot of drapery and upholstery fabric is for flammability. There are different flammability testing methods and standards. The one I see most often is UFAC Class 1 – California Technical Bulletin #117 Section E (that long title is often abbreviated.) The National Fire Protection Association has some different tests, NFPA 260 and NFPA 701. The 260 test is for horizontal surfaces (think upholstered furniture). The 701 test is for vertical surfaces like window coverings. These are “yes” or “no” tests – either the fabric passes (Class 1 or Pass) or it doesn’t. Generally, these ratings are taken into consideration only in commercial applications.

This label notes that a “Calendar” finish was applied to smooth the fabric.

Finishes

Sometimes a “finish” will be added to a curtain or drapery fabric. These will be listed on the fabric label and are usually a chemical finish that adds a property that the fabric does not naturally have, such as flame proofing or a soil and stain repellant finish.

Aside from whether you like the look of your fabric (the design information may help you understand the pattern features,) the next most important consideration is its construction and its recommended uses. For upholstery, check the durability rating. Depending on where you intend to use the fabric, cleaning may also be important. Don’t be overwhelmed by all the choices and information. Your designer will help you choose the right fabric.

Guide to the Finest Sheer Curtain Fabric

Color, pattern, texture – modern sheer curtain fabrics are found in an abundance of all of these!

No longer are we stuck with plain old sheer curtains – unless of course, you want to be. Plain sheer curtains are still a great accompaniment to drapery panels. Plain sheers will not distract from the heavier, more dramatic fabrics used for the draperies. Or as in the photo above, the delicate patterned sheer coordinates splendidly with the drapery and valance.

Sheer curtains on their own do a terrific job of filtering harsh sunlight, radiating a soft flowing feeling as they frame the window, and create some privacy while still allowing the light to pass through.

Sheers can be crafted and installed in all of the ways that custom curtains can be. Sheer curtains can have grommets or rings, be gathered, tabbed or pleated, and they can be attached to a traversing rod as well. The style of the mounting depends on your personal décor and the function of the sheers. Are they just beautifully framing and softening the window or are they needed for privacy and light filtering? Ask yourself what you hope to accomplish by installing sheer curtains before you choose which curtains to purchase.

Either way, you will have lots of fun trying to decide on a sheer or semi-sheer fabric given the thousands of choices we have today. There are wonderful subtle textures and patterns woven within the fibers themselves or some sheer fabrics have embroidered patterns. The colors are great too – soft ivories, creams, and pastels – and below you will even see some deeper toned sheer curtain fabric in black. Here is a semi-sheer panel in a powder room in brown:

The fabrics can be woven of different fibers to create different looks. A lot of the sheer curtain fabrics today are produced from man-made polyester, traditionally a more flame retardant material, but sheers are also made with linen and cotton.

We have several clients interested in sheer and casement window treatments. Today we are looking into casement fabrics. The definition of casement is:

Casual custom curtain fabric in loose or tight, open or closed, plain or novelty weave.  Often given interesting texture, color and pattern through tied complex-yarn arrangements and weave variations.

Sheer fabric is made using thin thread and/or low density of knit and which results in a semi-transparent and very light weight cloth. Some of these fabrics become totally transparent when wet.

Exploring Sheers and Casement Curtains

Like sheers, casement curtains allow light into the room but usually less than sheers. Casement fabrics are typically more loosely woven of thicker strands and the overall texture and appearance is heavier than sheer fabrics. They are better termed as semi-sheer and usually come in light natural colors although they are available in darker shades as well. Here are two close-ups to give you a better idea of the textures:

Schindlers Fabrics

Casement fabrics can absorb some sound to make the room a little quieter, soften architecture but not hide it, and can add a sensuous feel to the room without taken all the light away. When closed, the casement fabric curtains will give more privacy than a standard sheer.
