Fabric Adds Color, Pattern, and Texture Inside Your Home

Add Color to Your Home Using Fabrics

One of the first things I notice when I go into many new homes is the hard surfaces. These include hardwood floors, counter and table tops, windows, shutters, and blinds. They are often in neutral colors. What’s the one element that would soften these surfaces and make the home more inviting and interesting? Fabric!

Choose Fabric Color Based on the Room

How you add color depends on the use of the room. In living areas, splash color around the room on draperies, valances, cushions, pillows, and fabric shades. Bedspreads, throws, and accent pillows can be added to bedrooms. Other places to tuck in some color are lamp shades, artwork, area rugs, place-mats, throws, and towels.

Using fabric to add color also adds texture. When you see a luxurious fabric, don’t you reach out to run your hand over it? When is the last time you did that to a tabletop? Fabric helps break up all those hard surfaces with surfaces that are different both visually and sensually. Plus, they absorb sound, so listening to conversations, the TV, and music is easier on your ears.

Fabric also allows you to add patterns to enhance your visual experience of the room. Add vertical patterns and stripes to make a low-ceiling room look bigger. Big, bold patterns on draperies are like adding artwork to your windows.

This bold fabric-covered cornice adds interest to the window and absorbs some sound in this room of hard surfaces.

Decorative pillows in a variety of patterns and textures bring all the color elements in the room together.

Tiebacks – What’s Holding Your Draperies Back

Tiebacks for Draperies

Traditional fabric tiebacks are always a popular option for providing shape to your draperies. They are often made from the same fabric as the draperies. Sometimes I add decorative cording or trim, fringes, or beads to provide an accent.

Woven Trim Tiebacks

I also like to use a wide woven trim for a tieback instead of a piece of matching fabric. This works whether or not the trim is also used on the draperies.

Notice the beautiful pattern on these tiebacks.

Tassel Tiebacks are a Common Favorite

I love using tassels as tiebacks because they come in such a variety of sizes, fibers, and colors. I like using both coordinating or contrasting colors to create a great accent to the window.

I love these tassel tiebacks on elegant draperies.

How to Keep your Tiebacks in Place

Another consideration when choosing tiebacks is how to keep them in place. Many times, small rings on the backs of the tiebacks slip over small hooks that are mounted on the wall. This gives a nice, clean look, but so many other options are available!

Posts with decorative medallions are a wonderful choice. You can get square ones, round ones, metallic ones, painted ones, glass, wood, ceramic, globes, scrollwork, and more.

Posts and decorative curved arms mounted on the inside edge of the drapery can act as tiebacks as well.

These tiebacks really make these large windows look amazing.
