Drapery Hardware

We spend a lot of time with our decor choices and choosing our draperies but the one area that might be neglected is the drapery hardware. Let me show you some of the choices you have with drapery hardware and why choosing just the right match is kind of like putting on the final bling and accessories when you get dressed to go out.

Drapery Rods

Today’s choices are vast. Rods of varying sizes and made from wood or metal. Your choice of rod adds an additional element of design to your décor and window treatments. In addition to traditional straight rods, current design trends have arched windows. We are able to customize rods and bend at the same arch as the arch of your window.

Curtain Traverse Rods

Traverse rods are rods made with an operational mechanism where the attached draperies can be drawn using a pull chord. A one-way traverse rod pulls the all draperies to either side of the window. A two-way Traverse rod pulls the draperies in respective halves to the opposite sides of the window (left and right side). These are a perfect solution for a sliding glass door or group of french doors.

Drapery Rod Finials

The finial is really the “personality” on the end of the rod.  It is a perfect place to let your design preferences shine through. Finials are simply window adornments. They provide a wide variety of appearance for your windows. They could be wood, upholding the style of a traditional feel and class, or even glass. Metal is more contemporary and can be considered window bling. When your drapery rod runs into a wall, a finial cannot be used, at least not at both ends. An end cap is then used at the other end of the drapery accessory.

Curtain Holdbacks

Holdbacks are used to coordinate drapery accessories. They give an excellent finish to your window while keeping certain accessories in place exactly as you desire them.

Drapery Rings

Rings are used to attachment draperies to poles. They help panels slide along the rod easily while also providing decorative elements.

Curtain Track

Tracks allow for draperies to glide along the ceiling. They are primarily used when windows go from floor to ceiling and there is little space available. Don’t skimp on the quality of your track and glides.  You want them to be sturdy and slide effortlessly

Skylights Window Treatments Let The Sunshine In

Sunshine!

clipart sunshine

We love it. We need it.

Warmth, natural lighting, vitamin D, energy and attitude are just a few of the reasons why.

We hate it. It’s too much.

Intense heat, intense light, UV rays, and glare are a few of the reasons why we need to control it.

So here we have our standard double edged sword. We have skylights in our home for great natural lighting, but then there are times when it is just too much. What to do for Skylights Window Treatments?

The UV rays are bleaching objects in the room, the summer sun is making the room hot, and it’s just too bright in the morning when I want to sleep in.

Solution?

Skylights Window Treatments:  Shades! And the most common – cellular.

There are a few companies that manufacture cellular shadings systems that adapt to angled windows. The first thought might be – why are there only a few? But after your second thought, you may realize that the angle of the skylight can pose a problem, as it lends itself to the sagging of the fabric. Cellular shade construction allows an unseen cord inside the cells to keep the shade taut.

Here are some photos from Graber:

Lutron shows us the various ways a shade can be installed for a skylight – inside the opening, recessed and close to the window or even on the outside. They offer a frame and tension shades for skylights:

Comfortex has two shading systems available for skylights, the Soprano and the Balcony. The Soprano Skylight Shading System has a gear track that holds the fabric at any angle. The Balcony Skylight Shading System has a polycarbonate tracking system that forms a barrier around the edge of the shade for maximum energy-efficiency. Plus there are no exposed cords:

Cellular Shades are a great choice for skylights as they are very energy-efficient in their construction. Cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer gets trapped in the pockets of the cells, and the more cells you add, the more energy-efficient.

Hunter Douglas is able to make shadings for skylights from their Applause or Duette Architella lines. This allows you to get double cell or even triple cell construction. Depending on the fabric, you can not only diffuse the light, but by choosing a sheer and an opaque fabric, you have lots more options for control. The shadings are also available with top down, bottom up adjustments.

And speaking of control, Hunter Douglas has remote control shadings that can also work with your smart device or any home automation system for total control.

2 Story Window Treatment Ideas – Hunter Douglas Country Woods 2″ blinds

Before

We have been designing a lot of 2 Story Window treatments lately.  They make such a statement in a room just because of their size.  Adding fabric to the wall in a grand scale helps to “humanize” the windows, visually bringing the top windows into the room and giving it a cohesiveness it may lack otherwise.  Over the next several weeks, I will share several photos of designs we have used in and around the greater Cincinnati area.

The photos today show the before and after of a challenging job.  I think you can see how the fabric treatments take away the empty feeling the room had.  These windows face west and the homeowners had a terrible sun issue in the afternoon.  Hunter Douglas Country Woods 2″ blinds were selected for all the 2 story window treatments, with the top windows using the battery powered motorized PowerTilt with Platinum Technology remote control tilt system.  The top windows are arched, so we used standard rectangular blinds and covered the top with an arched cornice – a great little trick to know.

A new paint color in the room, selected specifically to match the fabrics, ties it all together.  The clients love their new look and the light control they now have.

Pleated Curtain Style

The Pleated Curtain Style

has enjoyed a surge in popularity the last few years.  There is no style that is as classic and timeless as a pleated curtain.  There are many different pleat styles available to make your custom curtain unique.  Today we will look at 3 styles, each having a distinctly different look, feel, and personality.

Euro Pleated Curtain StylesThe Euro Pleated Curtain Style

is a very updated, current look.  This style looks great hanging from rings and works well as stationary side panels or traversing curtain.

Goblet Pleated Curtain StyleThe Goblet Pleated Curtain Style

is another variation that is very classic.  It gets it’s name from the resemblance to a wine goblet.  Goblet Pleated curtains will traverse easily, but may not stack as tightly onto the side as the Euro Pleat.

Inverted Box Pleated Curtain Style

The Inverted Box Pleated Curtain Style

can be a statement all on it’s own.  As seen here, in this photo from Chicago’s Curtain Connection, decorative elements can be added to truly make your curtain a one of a kind.  This curtain is best suited for stationary side panels, as the pleats generally do not traverse well.

Installing Blinds Almost Like Magic | Adjust-A-View Take 2

Installing custom blinds: recently we installed an Adjust-A-View shade, gave you some information on the product, and shared some pictures. Today we have a video showing the ease of operation by one of our favorite clients, Carol. In her words “They installed the blinds almost like magic.”

The Adjust-A-View is very quick and easy to install even in a non-perfect window. Typically arched windows are constructed in a manner where the sill is built up into the window. The resulting radius is less than half the diameter and no longer “perfect”. The Adjust-A-View allows for plus or minus 2 inches of imperfection to easily fit any window.

The shade is custom made for your window using Hunter Douglas, Graber, Comfortex, Kirsh and Omega products. You can then match the shades on your other windows with your Adjust-A-View.
