Finials: the Final Dressing on your Window Treatments

Finials are decorative end pieces most often placed on both ends of the curtain rod. You’ve probably seen them all your life, but not realized you had the option of many choices of design.

Here are some the basic types of finials to help you better understand:

Ball Tip Finials – from the word itself ball, this type of finial is round and it looks like a doorknob. You can also see ball tip finials on some flagpoles or bed frames.

Acorn Tip Finial – surprisingly… this finial is shaped like an acorn.

Steeple Tip Finials – these are triangular shaped finials that have pointed ends. If inverted they would resemble a church steeple.

Neo-gothic Finials – these are designed like steeple tip but with a medieval vibe though the design looks more complex compared to the other types of finials.

Contemporary Finials – comes in a number of more streamlined contemporary styles. Simple basic shapes and materials.

Swirled Finials –designed to look like a swirl and it creates an illusion of the rod extending through the swirls.

Stemmed Finials –may be mistaken for a swirled finials but stemmed finials looks like a tree branch and same as swirled finials, it creates an illusion that your window rods extends to the finials and you are not using one.

Square Finials –comes from the word square itself, square but of course, they have different structures but the main body looks like a box.

Bird Cage Finials –looks like a round cage that can be compared to a bird’s cage. It creates an architectural look of patterns shaped like a ball but hollow on the inside.

Crown Finials– from the name itself, crown. These types of finial looks like a crown in different designs and styles may it be a king, a queen, a prince or a princess these types of finials, give a Victorian vibe to your windows.

Trumpet Finials – compared to the steeple finials, the trumpet finials have the pointed end on the rod and the wider part faces outwards.

Finials are made from different materials, which provide an endless list of choices. It can be made from wood, different kinds of metal or even plastic. There is always a finial that will fit your design style and if you notice that your windows don’t have finials, maybe it’s time to consider upgrading and include finials. Window Safety Blinds : October is Child Safety Month

Children are naturally curious and constantly exploring and learning all about the world around them both inside and outside. They seem especially fascinated with windows and doors. Are your window treatments safe for them?

Children peeking out the window

The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are urging parents, grandparents and caregivers to check all window treatments in the home for potential strangulation hazards, specifically exposed cords and dangling cords.

Window Safety Blinds

Here are proactive tasks for Child Safety:

  • Position cribs, beds, playpens and other furniture away from windows.
  • Check all windows and doors for exposed or dangling cords.
  • Keep all cords beyond the reach of any child.
  • Eliminate cords whenever possible.
  • Permanently anchor continuous cord loop window treatment cords to the wall or the floor.
  • Replace current window treatments with cordless ones.

Color is Coming Back in 2018!

Everyone loves neutrals. They get along with everybody, are easy to live with, and they’re easy to decorate around. But I find more and more customers lately telling me, “I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of gray.”

For a long time, “neutral” meant beige. Then grays became popular for neutral tones. Now the neutral color is “greige, ” a rich, versatile color created by adding gray to beige. It works in both cool and warm color schemes.  The mix of beige to gray in your greige is what determines how cool or warm it is.

These neutrals are all beautiful. But even with greige, people still feel they are drowning in neutrality. Humans crave color and I’m delighted to see this reflected in the fabrics my customers are choosing. Their background colors are still neutral, but my customers are adding some wonderful rich color accents.

Accent pillows and throws are a quick and easy way to add some colorful fun to a neutral room. We can also help customers add color by recovering seat cushions, creating a new bedspread, or installing a new shower curtain—there are options for any room you’re working in. But my favorite way to add color and excitement is with new window treatments. We get new fabric books every month and there are hundreds and hundreds of bright fabrics to choose from. Colorful options are also available in window blinds, shades, and shutters.

If you want more information on how to use color for custom draperies or any of the other ideas here, contact Kim for your free in-home consultation – 513-398-5798 or email klyon@windowaccentsinc.com

Energy Efficient Draperies

Energy Efficient Draperies can help you reduce the cost of heating and cooling your home. Typically created with a number of layers [see video], they help balance room temperatures and light exposure by insulating against summer heat and winter chill. The result is lower utility bills—by up to 25%, depending on your home and climate.

When considering Energy Efficient Draperies, most people focus on the savings in their utility bills. But consider these additional benefits:

Energy Efficient Draperies Protect your Furnishings

Protect your furniture, floors, and artwork from the ravages of the sun with Energy Efficient Draperies that block 85 to 99 per cent of the sun’s light and UV rays. Bright summer sunlight can fade the colors in your carpet and furnishings in just a few years. Wood furniture can bleach out and become dry with repeated exposure to sunlight. Energy Efficient Draperies will block out the damaging rays and preserve your budget by preserving your furnishings.

Energy Efficient Draperies are Sound Dampening

The multiple layers of Energy Efficient Draperies create a noise barrier that muffles outside sounds for a quieter, more relaxing room.

Energy Efficient Draperies help Kids Sleep Better

It can be hard to get babies and toddlers to take a rest during the day when the sun is streaming brightly through a bedroom window. Room-darkening Energy Efficient Draperies cut out the light, encouraging the best possible sleep at naptime. They can also give you some extra time in the morning because the kids no longer wake up with the sun.

Third Shift Workers Get a Sound Day’s Sleep

Working third shift and sleeping during the day can be hard, particularly on a bright sunny day or when there’s lots of noise outside. Cardboard taped over the windows can help, but it’s not very pretty and makes it hard to let the light in when you want it. Room darkening Energy Efficient Draperies make it easy to block out the outside world so you can get a good day’s rest.

Energy Efficient Draperies Darken the Night

Does your neighbor leave the porch light on all night? Does the street lamp shine directly on your bed? Do you wake up when the sun rises? Room darkening Energy Efficient Draperies will let you sleep in the dark, keep your room quieter, and insulate it from outside air temperatures. Ahh…there’s a lot to be said for a good night’s sleep!

Energy Efficient Draperies Provide Theater Blackout

Create the dark movie-house experience for your home theater by using room darkening Energy Efficient Draperies. They also block out outside noises so you can get the full effect of your sound system. Even if you just have a small TV with built-in speakers, room darkening Energy Efficient Draperies can cover too-bright windows behind the TV, eliminate glare and reflections on your screen, and let you turn the volume down.

Options with Energy Efficient Draperies – just call 513-398-5798

Window Accents offers such a broad assortment of options to resolve any of these concerns. The best way to explore is to visit our showroom in Loveland or invite us to your home to discuss the options. Traverse Custom Curtain Rods

Traverse Curtain Rods are Changing With the Times.

Years ago, one of just a few common window treatment styles was the pinch pleated curtain on a white, off-white, or brown metal traverse rod. The rods on these standard window treatments were purely functional and hidden behind the drapery as much as possible. Traverse rod draperies are still a wonderful way to spruce up your windows. But today, there are a lot of other drapery hardware options for your windows.

Traverse drapery rods, invented by Charles W. Kirsch in 1928, are still very popular with traditional décor. They come in many decorative styles that allow the rod, holdbacks, end caps, finials, and even the rings to be a decorative part of the window treatment.

On the rod, the curtains are hung via metal hooks inserted into the rod carriers.

Modern rods conform to child safety standards and use cords, wands, remotes, and hand operation to open and close them.

Traverse rods can be installed with two-way draw – opening from the center and stacking the curtains on each side, or left or right draw, which stacks the fabric folds on one side or the other, convenient for sliding doors. Traverse rods are made of metal or wood, can be mounted on the wall or the ceiling, and have other options – they may be a double rod to hang sheers behind curtains and can also be curved to conform to various window styles.

Traverse Rod Explained by Kim Lyon Video:

New Ripplefold Traverse Rods have moved into the home.

Ripplefold traverse rods are a relatively recent innovation in trendy window treatments. Originally used commercially, this fashionable style is now being used residentially because it has a clean contemporary look that is perfect for modern décor.

Ripplefold curtains are hung by sewing a stiff snap tape to the top of flat curtain panels. The snap carriers can be spaced to allow for several different amounts of fullness with a smooth wavy heading.

When using a Ripplefold Traverse Rod, you will notice that the curtains hang below the rod. Ripplefold rods come in sleek modern finishes, adding to your contemporary décor. Or they may be painted, upholstered, ceiling mounted, or covered by a top treatment to create the look you desire.

It doesn’t matter if you prefer the traditional look of a pinch pleated draperies with a more modern decorative rod, or the sleek new wave of the ripple fold curtain, Kim will help you select fabric and hardware perfect for your style and your home. Call 513-398-5798 or email Kim today – klyon@windowaccentsinc.com.

Curved Drapery Rods Solve Bay Window Problems

Use Unique Curved Drapery Rods to Solve Your Window Problems

Curtain rods don’t have to be straight! They can be bent or curved to fit the shape of your wall.

Many homes I visit have bay windows that are three or more standard windows mounted in flat walls set at an angle to the main wall. A variety of options are available for these using standard shades, shutters, and curtains.

Bay Windows Were Different in This Home

But Paula’s bay window was different. The walls were finished to a gentle arc five windows wide. The ledge at the bottom of the window was a favorite sleeping place for her small dog. She wanted to filter the sunlight while still allowing the dog to sleep on the ledge. We could have installed a drapery on the flat wall outside the bay window, but that would have left the dog wondering how to get to her favorite place in the sun.

curved drapery rods

Our Customer Loved Pinch Pleat Sheer Draperies

Paula loved the idea of installing pinch-pleat sheer draperies on a curved curtain rod inside the bay window. The curved traverse rod allows her to open and close the curtains as needed. A narrow drapery on the flat wall at the sides of the window provides a nice accent in a coordinating fabric.

What unusual wall shapes do you have? We can fit them with horizontally curved rods, rods that bend to fit inside corners, and rods that bend around outside corners. Cornices and valances can also be shaped to fit your unique windows.

Faux Wood Blinds : How do I Clean my Window Treatments?

We install your fabulous new window treatments and then the holidays come around and you wonder – how do I clean these?

Window treatment cleaning methodsWell no matter what style of window treatment you have, you will do well to remember two basic rules:

Keep the Dust Off

Be Gentle

Dust will collect anywhere, anytime and will collect moisture. Moisture will then attract more dust and also dirt.  Hard-surface products like blinds and shutters are best dusted with a feather duster or a soft filament duster or wide paintbrush.  Soft products like cellular shades, roman shades or drapery stay cleanest with a twice-a-year gentle vacuuming with the brush attachment on a vacuum.  Chemically treated dusting cloths must be used with care, certain sheer shading products can be damaged with these.

Below you will find great ways to clean almost any window treatment and remember that you can contact us any time you have questions or concerns or need professional help.

Faux Wood Blinds

Wood BlindTo keep and maintain the natural look of your faux wood blinds, we recommend wiping them off with a soft cloth, a feather duster or using the brush attachment from your vacuum cleaner. Unlike real wood blinds, faux-woods can be cleaned with a mild non-abrasive soap and warm water. Always remember to rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely in the open air before placing back in the window. Remember to never use hot water and to clean on a weekly basis, and you will always be able to enjoy the natural look of wood.

Honeycomb Cellular Shades

Honeycomb cellular shades are both durable and functional. To keep your honeycomb cellular shades looking like new, we recommend regular dusting with a feather duster. You can also use the brush attachment of your vacuum or even blow off dust with a can of compressed air. If you need to deal Honeycomb Shadewith stains, blot with a damp sponge and a very mild soap. If this does not take out the stain, you can remove the honeycomb cellular from its mounting bracket and soak it in warm, mild soapy water. Be very careful! Make sure to test the soap on a discreet corner first and rinse thoroughly. When you are ready to put your honeycomb cellular shade back in the window, make sure to raise the shade tightly to re-crease the pleats.

Mini Blinds

How often you clean your blinds is really dependent upon you and your family, the climate you live in and the overall traffic that moves through your house on a daily basis. Your blinds will attract dust, dirt, pollen, hair, grease and even bugs!

Mini BlindsMini, Wood, Faux and Vertical blinds should all be lightly cleaned on a weekly basis. By lightly cleaned, we recommend simply dusting them off with a dust rag or feather duster once a week. Eventually, a light dusting will not remove all of the dirt, so you will need to be a little more aggressive.

Mini blinds are easy to clean and maintain. A good way to start is by opening your mini-blinds and going over them with a vacuum. Usually your vacuum will have a soft brush attachment. Run that over the slats, as it is a good way to get the dust. Then remove your mini-blind from the headrail. Lay out your blinds on a padded, flat area. Make sure your mini-blinds are in the closed position. Use mild soap and water (warm, not hot), you can use Windex glass cleaner or a diluted pine cleanser. Soap thoroughly, then rinse gently. Now either turn the blind over or open it the opposite way, and repeat the process. One important thing to remember is, after rinsing, allow your mini-blinds to dry .

Natural Woven ShadesNatural Woven Shades

Natural woven shades are quite unique. They provide a relaxed look and feel to any room. To keep your woven woods looking like new, we recommend cleaning on a regular basis using a feather duster or the brush attachment on your vacuum. You may want to start by raising and lowering your natural shades to help reduce dust, and then use a soft dust cloth until you are familiar with the uniqueness of the material. It is simple to continue to enjoy the relaxed beauty of your natural woven shades

Pleated Shades

Pleated ShadesPleated shades are both durable and functional. To keep your pleated shades looking fresh and new, we recommend regular dusting with a feather duster. You can also use the brush attachment of your vacuum or even blow off dust with a can of compressed air. If you need to deal with stains, blot with a damp sponge and a very mild soap. If this does not take out the stain, you can remove the pleated shade from its mounting bracket and soak it in warm, and rub gently with mild soapy water. Be very careful! Make sure to lay flat to dry completely. Make sure to test the soap on a discreet corner first and rinse thoroughly. When you are ready to put your pleated shade back in the window, make sure to raise the shade tightly to re-crease the pleats.

Roller ShadesRoller Shades

Roller shades are a time-tested window treatment that is both durable and functional. To keep your roller shade looking fresh and new is simple and easy. We recommend periodic dusting with a feather duster or light vacuuming with the brush attachment on your vacuum. For some of the vinyl fabrics, you wipe off with a damp sponge. Clean regularly and you will always maintain their original long-lasting beauty.

Roman ShadesRoman Shades

Roman (Fabric) shades are both elegant and functional. One of the best qualities they offer however is that they are simple and easy to clean. We recommend occasional vacuuming with the brush attachment on your vacuum. You could also use a feather duster for regular light cleaning. By performing regular cleaning you will be able to keep your Roman (Fabric) shade looking beautiful and fresh for years to come.

Shutters

ShuttersShutters are made to be durable and easily cared for and easy to clean. Cleaning your shutters is simple and should be done periodically. It is important to remember that real wood can warp. Do not clean or soak with water. To keep and maintain the natural elegance of your real wood shutters, we recommend wiping them off with a soft cloth, a feather duster or use the brush attachment from your vacuum cleaner. Occasionally you may even want to use a non-wax furniture polish and a soft rag to rejuvenate the wood to its original luster. As for vinyl shutters, it is ok to use a mild soap and warm water. Clean your shutters on a regular basis and you will always be able to enjoy the beauty and durability of shutters.

Sheer Window Shades

Sheer Window ShadingsSheer window shades look delicate and elegant. But don’t let their looks fool you. They are constructed with sturdy knitted polyester. To keep them looking new it is simple and easy. Both vertical and horizontal soft sheers only require periodic dusting. We recommend you use a feather duster and lightly dust them on a periodic basis or even blow off dust with a can of compressed air. In case you require cleaning a spot or stain, lightly blot with a damp sponge and some mild soap. Don’t use chemical cleaners as they may discolor the fabric. Clean on a regular basis and you will always keep your sheer window shadings looking beautiful for a long time.

We do however, recommend professional cleaning when neccessary and will recommend a technician for you.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical BlindsVertical blinds come in different types: vinyl, fabric, aluminum and wood. All are easy to maintain and keep looking beautiful. One mistake people make when cleaning their vertical blinds is that they tend to be a little too aggressive in thinking that these are very sturdy and can handle anything. Although vertical blinds are quite durable, you still need to take care when cleaning them. When cleaning your vinyl and aluminum verticals, begin by giving them a light dusting like you would treat your fine furniture. Then clean with soap and water. It is highly recommended to clean each vane one at a time. It is best to use a mild non-abrasive cleaner. As for your fabric vertical blinds, you will want to dust them off lightly with a feather duster, then use a vacuum (brush attachment) and run it over all of the vanes.

Remember, whichever type of vertical you are cleaning, make sure to open completely one way. Clean. Then open completely the other way and clean. Clean each vane individually on a flat surface, never use hot water, and do not over-soak them.

Draperies, Top Treatments, Valances and Cornice Boards

Draperies and ValanceThe single most important thing to remember is to never wash your drapery by hand. This includes putting them in a washing machine or even cleaning them with mild soap and water. Just don’t do it! You can (very carefully) lightly vacuum your drapery using the brush attachment of your vacuum. But remember to be gentle.
Unfortunately, there are no industry standards on how often to clean your drapery, but we do recommend vacuuming twice a year or as warranted by the traffic patterns in your home. If that doesn’t satisfy you, then take them to be dry cleaned. You should consider taking your drapery into a professional dry cleaner every 3 to 5 years. It is always best to use your own good judgment as to how often to have them cleaned. Nobody knows the elements your home is exposed to better than you do.

Sliding Glass Door Window Treatments

Spring is the time of year when we want to open up our house and let the light and the lovely outdoors in. We open drapes, shutters, windows and doors to let in the fresh air and scents of the new season.

But wait . . . . . too much light?

Not enough privacy?

What do you do for sliding glass door window treatments?

How can we address the challenges of this huge functional “window”?

draperies for sliding glass doorIndeed, the sliding glass door is a challenge. We appreciate its function and its light but sometimes need to tone down the sunlight for energy efficiency and we want privacy at times as well.

We have some window treatment solutions that not only give a functional, energy efficient way to dress your sliding glass door, but are very fashionable as well.

If you are a fabric lover and like the look of drapes, you can use them on a decorative rod mounted above the sliding glass door. Using grommets or rings will allow easy movement of the drapes across the rod so you can either have them open for full access to the door or close them for privacy. Traverse rods would be a good idea for this application as well. Depending on the type of fabric you choose, whether the drapes are lined, or if you choose to also do a second rod with sheers, your energy efficiency goal can be met.

Another option that involves fabric is the Roman shade. Two Roman shades can be installed above the sliding glass door on a single header that will allow you to operate each independently for the light control and privacy you desire.

Shades installed in this fashion are also an option. Decorative valances can be an additional item that can tie all the design elements of the room together.

shades for sliders

Natural woven shade vertical drapes are a great functional, as well as fashionable choice for your sliding glass door. They are available in lots of different woods, reeds, and grasses, have no cords, and can be as sheer or opaque as you prefer.

woven panels for sliders

An even more modern look is the sliding panel. These sleek contemporary panels come in a wide variety of fabrics and materials to match your décor. They are both functional and fashionable.

screen panels for sliding glass door

And finally we have vertical solutions that have advanced and changed with the times, offering you a large variety of color and style combinations. Hunter Douglas has Luminette Privacy Sheers, Duette and Applause with Vertiglide, and Somner vertical blinds that are functional, fashionable and energy efficient for your sliding door. What more could you ask for? We design custom window treatments in Cincinnati to match your personal design and interior style.

Specialty Shutters

Shutters are more than just a design element on your windows and doors that control the light and your privacy; they also add value to your home. Much like your cabinetry, real wood shutters are considered a furniture asset.

 Norman Window Fashions Shutters

Fabric was the first material placed over the window area in homes prior to inserting glass panels. Glass was very expensive. Since the fabric was not a good deterrent of weather, light, peepers or intruders, shutters were added to windows. At first they were flat panels and covered the entire window. Later on they covered the bottom of the window and glass was on the top portion to keep the cost down. When all glass windows became common, shutters were added to the outside of the windows to protect the glass from the elements. Angled slats became popular for shutters to keep the rain off the window as well as letting some light in.

Today shutters are back on the inside of windows and are indeed way more advanced in design and construction. Almost any shape or size of window and door can be fitted for a shutter. Shutters can be used in every room of the home due to the selection of materials used in their creation. Because of this variety of factors in shutter design and construction, we are talking more than just specialty shaped shutters today.

Here is a look at different window shapes fitted with shutters from our friends at Hunter Douglas:

Hunter Douglas shutter shapes

We have a client currently that needs a shutter made to fit an oval window. Ovals come in variety as well – some longer and elliptical and others more rounded. A template is made to create the shutter to fit perfectly over the window. Below is a sample of an oval shutter:

Kim Lyon oval shutter photo

Templates are often needed to get the perfect fit for arch windows too. Once again Hunter Douglas shares their shutters for arches:

HD arched shutters

The room of your home that you need fitted for shutters, may determine the material you choose for the construction. Genuine wood constructed shutters are lightweight, stainable, paintable and strong. Composite or hybrid shutters are made of part wood and part man-made material. Shutters made of all vinyl are the most UV and water resistant, making them the perfect choice for the bath or the kitchen sink area but are usually only available in white or off white colors. The finishes used on the non-wood shutters make it hard to tell if they are made of all wood or composites. There is a shutter to fit every room and every budget.

Shutters for different rooms by HD

Two story windows can be a great place to use shutters. Keep in mind that as long as there is a vertical side, motorization is possible for those high louvers:

Hunter Douglas two story window shutters

Shutters for doors are becoming very popular. Below there are some options showing cut outs around handles, sliding panels and more:

shutters for doors by HD

So as you can see, specialty shutters can be made to fit just about anywhere, in just about any shape, in a wide range of materials and colors to fit your needs. The Rustic Decor Trend

We talked a couple of weeks ago about the color trends for next year and their refection of our life style today – our feeling of being constantly connected and our desire to disconnect, unwind and relax. This theme shows through in the Rustic Décor trend for our homes as well.

This style is used in all types of custom window treatments in Cincinnati – though we recommend it specifically for custom curtains as well as with certain types of custom blinds. If you are interested in learning how match this design style with your home, please contact us to get started.

Window Accents by Tom Miller

This design trend is what all of us are looking for – a relaxing, comfy, cozy, casual place to call home. Materials are natural, colors are warm and earthy, and the outdoors is brought in. We are reconnecting with nature, reusing and recycling.

Pinterest DYI rustic projectsWhen we get on the internet and go to Pinterest, we see hundreds of DIY projects made from wood pallets, mason jars, burlap, and reclaimed wood. They are not only creative and cute, but they are very functional and practical and fit in with the other pieces of our home décor.

Several of our client’s homes that we have visited recently are very cozy and comfy and rustic. Here is the inside of a log cabin before the Thanksgiving meal:

Our trending rustic furniture is made from wood, perfect in it’s imperfection, familiar and casual.
